2. Principle of a typical machine
The principle of a chip-removing machine tool is very simple: a workpiece is moved in front of a tool (fixed or moving). This relative displacement results, if there is tool/workpiece interference, in the removal of material, which we call machining.
Note :
most of the material removed must belong to the workpiece. However, most machining processes also involve the removal of material from the tool; this is wear whose effect is not always harmful (cf. self-regeneration of grinding wheels or honing stones).
