6. Sealants for metals
The problem of sealing joints between metal parts is similar to that of adhesive bonding, but in the case of sealing, the aim is simply to seal the joint, generally with a flexible product that tolerates slight dimensional variations of the joint, and there is no need for very strong assemblies with high mechanical properties, as the parts are held together by other mechanical means. It should be noted, however, that the two operations (bonding and sealing) are sometimes performed in a single operation.
For welding and gluing bodywork components, the adhesive, applied in layers 0.5 to 1 mm thick, serves both to securely join the parts together and to provide a watertight seal, while also damping sheet metal vibrations.
