Experience shows that, in order not to exceed friction coefficients of 0.005 for lift pressures ranging from 10 5 to 103 Pa, the theoretical flying height must be of the order of 5 × 10 2 to 5 × 10–1 mm depending on the state of the sliding surface. The power then varies according to the desired flight height and the size and number of cushions.
There are three main characteristics that can be used to judge surface condition, and only experience or experimentation can provide a ranking.
