3. Controlled leak tightness
Rotational movement is used to create special seals that are only effective when moving. Such dynamic systems must be backed up by a static seal.
Fixed-ring annular seals (figure
5
) operate on the principle of throttling action provided by a long annular gap with a relatively small clearance of the order of a few tens to a few hundreds of microns. Since their efficiency is directly related to the viscosity of the fluid, this type of seal is suitable for liquids, and in particular for applications where some leakage can be tolerated.
