2. Linear fracture mechanics and stress intensity factors
The definition of linear fracture mechanics (LFM) is based on the method used to calculate the "elastic" stress intensity factor under uniform loading. Calculation of the stress intensity factor (SIF), the driving force behind cracking, ultimately enables propagation kinetics to be predicted.
Linear fracture mechanics considers the evolution of a defect modeled by a crack in a structure subjected to external mechanical loading. The geometric representation of a crack and the associated coordinate system used to describe the stress state at the crack tip are shown in figure
