11. Water content
There are two methods for determining the water content of hydraulic fluids:
by the electrochemical method and Karl Fischer coulometry;
by the Dean and Starck distillation method, with water entrained in xylene.
In 1935, Karl Fischer published his new method for volumetric determination of water content in liquids and solids. However, he had not yet fully grasped the reaction sequence. A first equation, describing exactly the stoichiometry of the KF reaction, was published by Smith, Bryand and Mitchell.
