2. Compressible fluid flow
The aim of this chapter is to present the different flow regimes
that can occur between the faces of a mechanical seal when it is operating
with a compressible fluid.
A pure body can generally be presented in three different states:
solid, liquid and gas. We will confine ourselves to the case of fluids,
i.e. liquid and gas. In a pressure-temperature diagram, the liquid
and gas phases are separated by a line called the saturation curve
(red line on figure
3
). The curve ends at a so-called critical point, beyond which there
is no difference between the liquid and gaseous states
