3. Materialologist" strategies
The term "materiology" is a recent one, and expresses the fact that materials science and engineering are moving closer together, with the different partners working towards a common goal of better use of natural resources (raw materials, energy), concern for the environment (recyclability, pollution, toxicity...), combined with better production quality (efficiency, lead times, price) and product use.
However, everyone's concerns are expressed in different ways, and the — object designer who has to make the — realization decisions is necessarily at the crossroads of different strategies. A quick look at them, at the risk of oversimplifying, may shed some light on the situation.
