Following the French Revolution, the creation of the decimal metric system and its dissemination throughout the world, metrology gradually took shape on a global scale over the course of the 19th century. An important milestone was the drafting of the Metre Convention in 1875, a diplomatic treaty currently signed by 62 member states and with 41 associate states and economic entities (in 2020).
