4.1 Physical principle of molecular absorption

  • The description of molecular absorption is also based on the quantum representation of matter and light-molecule interactions. Unlike Raman scattering, which involves indirect transitions between ro-vibrational quantum levels, the absorption phenomenon involves direct transitions. The transition selection rules applying to the absorption phenomenon are also different, and can be written in 1 er order:

    Δn=0,±1  et  ΔJ=0,±1
