In 1900, Planck modelled the radiation emitted by a heated body as coming from the oscillations of the electrons making up the body. These small oscillating charges acted like small antennae, emitting radiation at frequencies greater than radio waves (IR, visible and UV) due to the confinement of electrons around atoms. The possible energy values of these small oscillators are discrete and proportional to an integer multiple of the radiation frequency:
