2. Sample introduction
In mass spectrometry, analysis begins either with the direct introduction of the sample into the mass spectrometer source, or after a preliminary separation step of the mixture's constituents, usually performed by a chromatographic system. The introduction system chosen will depend on the physico-chemical properties of the sample constituents (thermal stability, polarity, solubility, size, etc.) and the operating characteristics of the source used.
