1. Earth as an electrical conductor
The earth, our earth, is relatively conductive and constitutes an absolute reference of potential V = 0 V, but is in fact only valid at a certain depth, the so-called distant earth taken as a reference. It allows the evacuation of unwanted currents, including lightning currents, but also many others. It has many other roles, which we will briefly outline in the following paragraphs.
