The transmission network can be faced at any time with hazards that call into question its integrity:

• the loss of one or more transmission lines;

• the loss of one or more production units;

• poor estimation of consumption profile;

• short-circuits that may be incorrectly eliminated.

The network operator wants to be sure that, at all times, the network can fulfill its mission in complete safety, and can therefore cope with a limited number of contingencies, generally the most likely, at a cost acceptable to all.
