Tension control in France is organized around a three-tier hierarchical structure.

• Primary voltage setting

  The only voltage sources on the transmission network are alternators, which are equipped with a voltage regulator. The primary voltage regulator (Automatic Voltage Regulator, or AVR) automatically keeps the voltage across the alternator stator constant and equal to a set value, by acting on the excitation voltage that controls the machine's rotor current.
