2. Current stationary applications
With a few exceptions of secondary importance, which will not be dealt with here, current stationary applications do not generally exploit hydrogen's lower calorific value. Instead, hydrogen is used as a chemical reagent which, when combined with other species, produces useful molecules such as ammonia or methanol. With the prospect of fossil fuels being phased out, it is clear that current stationary hydrogen applications will have to be maintained, but using green hydrogen.
One application currently under development, however, differs very clearly from the others: the development of controlled thermonuclear fusion. In this application, nuclear rather than chemical reactions are used to produce large quantities of energy.
