Although they are trithermal absorption systems like water-lithium bromide (H ₂ O-LiBr) systems, ammonia-water (NH ₃ -H ₂ O) systems differ significantly in terms of technology from H ₂ O-LiBr cycles for several reasons:

• the refrigerant is an aqueous solution very rich in ammonia;

• operating pressure is high and generally higher than atmospheric pressure;

• the evaporator produces a two-phase liquid-steam mixture;
