7. Jar oven
Also known as a crucible furnace, this is the oldest glass-making furnace in the world. Glass is melted in an earthen crucible, the pot, heated in a closed enclosure. This type of furnace was first wood-fired, then gas-fired. Today, it is heated either with fuel oil or natural gas.
7.1 The pots
There are two types of pots:
the open jar whose contents are directly exposed to the flame;
the covered pot in which the glass is not affected by the products of combustion.
In principle, the covered pot produces a better quality glass (particularly in the case of certain colored glasses), but melting is somewhat slower or requires a higher heating temperature....
