8. Pollution and the environment
As energy consumers, furnaces have a significant impact on the environment, particularly through their atmospheric emissions. For example, some very large furnaces in the chemical, iron and steel or cement industries discharge fumes from their chimneys that can exceed one million tonnes per year.
In the case of industrial furnaces, the most common pollutants are :
sulfur oxides (SO2 and SO3) formed from the sulfur contained in certain fuels (fuel oil, coke oven gas, etc.);
nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, N2O) formed during combustion either from nitrogen compounds contained in the fuel, or by high-temperature combination of nitrogen and oxygen in the air;
