Biological and health effects of ionising radiation - Knowledge drawn from human exposure to ionising radiation

The health consequences of occupational exposure have been assessed for decades by means of epidemiological studies, which record observed mortality, causes of death and radiological exposure data. Two large cohorts are regularly monitored: uranium miners and workers involved in the fuel cycle or nuclear power generation. Other cohorts of occupationally-exposed workers, such as medical personnel or aircrew, are also monitored, but data on them is less extensive, so they will not be covered in this document.
