3. Nuclear measurements on laboratory samples
3.1 General
Apart from a few small satellite laboratories located directly in the workshops for reasons of radioactivity or geographical remoteness, the La Hague reprocessing center has three main laboratories with different missions.
The main tasks of the central laboratory are
Balance sheet and specification analyses on finished products: the main feature is measurement accuracy, with response times such that measurements are possible during normal working hours;
validation of analysis methods.
The vitrification laboratory is responsible for analysis of the vitrification workshops.

In France, Cogema operates two commercial light-water fuel reprocessing plants, UP3 and UP2 800, with a unit capacity of 800 t/year, at La Hague, and a natural uranium fuel reprocessing plant at Marcoule, which will cease production at the end of 1997;
