2. Fuel description
All current plutonium fuels for RNRs are based on mixed oxide UO
2
-PuO
2
, with the exception of a few experimental elements whose potential development is discussed at the end of this article.
PuO
2
powder comes from the irradiated fuel processing plant, where it is packaged in sealed cans, each containing around 3 kg of powder. It is fully characterized in physical, chemical and isotopic terms.
