6. Formation of tritium and carbon14
This element can be formed in several ways in a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The main ones are fission and neutron-induced nuclear reactions on the boron and lithium compounds present (control rods, for example):
10B (n, 2α) 3H ;
6Li (n, α) 3H ;
7Li (n, nα) 3H ;
11B (n, 9Be) 3H ;
direct ternary fission (yield ~ 10–4 atoms per fission) ;
ternary fission formation of 6He → 6Li → 3H by reaction (n, α) on 6Li.
