7. Electromagnetic and ionic processes
These methods involve ionization of the species present in the feed, and use electric and magnetic fields to accelerate and separate the ions. They are characterized by relatively high separation factors and low fluxes, limited by the low densities inherent in the ion beams and plasmas used.
The electromagnetic separation process is based on the fact that a charged particle moving in a magnetic field follows a curvilinear trajectory, the radius of which depends on the particle's mass. Heavier particles then describe a larger circle than lighter ones, assuming they have the same charge and are moving at the same speed.
