The basic concept of oxy-combustion is simple: replace air with pure oxygen (with a purity of at least 95%) in an air separation unit (ASU) to burn a fossil fuel either in a boiler or in a gas turbine. The combustion products then form a mixture of CO
2
and water vapor, from which the CO
2
can easily be extracted by condensation of the water.
