5. How it works
Membrane separation processes can be operated in batch or continuous mode. In the latter case, operation may have to be interrupted as a result of membrane clogging which, by reducing flow or altering selectivity, takes the plant away from its operating point. The membranes are then cleaned using chemical or mechanical procedures to restore their characteristics.
Membrane cleaning is an essential operation for restoring proper operating conditions in line with specifications. It should be noted that, in general, cleaning does not restore the initial characteristics of the new membrane.
