4. Preservation by temperature reduction
Since molecular mobility, flexibility, plasticity and reactivity are strongly temperature-dependent, temperature reduction is an effective way of slowing down cellular metabolism.
Cold preservation is achieved in three main ways:
low and positive temperature maintenance ;
cryopreservation with crystal formation;
cryopreservation with vitrification.
Both cryopreservation methods use cryogenic temperatures at which gases liquefy at atmospheric pressure.
