5. Conclusion
Isosorbide is one of the biosourced molecules of the future whose use is intensifying. Industrial production is already well-established, and there is considerable scope for further development if production volumes approaching those of petroleum-based compounds are to be achieved in the long term. Given production tonnages, it's fairly obvious that a few points gain in synthesis yield would represent a significant gain. This gain is all the more crucial given that the cost of biobased materials is often a limitation to their development. Advances in synthesis and purification, as well as process intensification, are opening up new prospects for reducing the cost of isosorbide.
