The formation of paint or varnish films follows different mechanisms, depending on whether the product is air-cured or oven-cured, but it is the result of the paint's transition from a liquid to a solid state.

• Air drying at room temperature or oven drying (40 to 80 ˚C): oxidation drying (oxidopolymerization), polyaddition drying, physical drying, ultraviolet radiation drying ;

• Kiln drying: polycondensation drying, polyaddition drying.
