6. Paint industry
The essential component of a paint is the film-forming element, whose role is to bind the other elements of the formula, which are pigments, fillers, additives and volatile compounds.
The binder is a raw polymer of natural origin (polysaccharides, oils or bituminous products), processed (cellulose, rubber or oil derivatives) or synthetic (acrylic compounds, polyesters, aminoplasts, phenoplasts, silicones, polyaddition of epoxides and polyurethanes...).
Pigments are powdery bodies, white or colored, natural or artificial, mineral or organic, insoluble in the dispersion medium. Their role is to impart color and hiding power to the paint, and to inhibit the degradation of the binder. Traditional pigment bases are zinc oxides...
