2. ATOFINA process description
This is a methanol-based process using a liquid-phase catalytic route to synthesize methyl chloride, and a liquid-phase photochemical route to chlorinate methyl chloride to higher chloromethanes. Both reactions are carried out under pressure.
The ATOFINA process uses the hydrochlorination of methanol catalyzed by an aqueous solution of zinc chloride. Before examining the process in detail, it is worth recalling the principles governing reaction kinetics and selectivity, bearing in mind that dimethyl ether is formed as a by-product:
