It is very difficult to reliably estimate the operating costs of supercritical fluid extraction/fractionation equipment without determining the specific constraints and capacity of the plant.
However, experience has enabled us to identify a few broad outlines.
3.1 Investment
The cost of a supercritical fluid extraction/fractionation plant varies approximately as the square root of the capacity expressed in CO 2 flow rate; thus, for the same type of unit (same process, same number of extractors/columns/separators, etc.) the cost is multiplied by only 3.2 when the capacity is multiplied by 10.
