The composition of coals varies considerably from one type to another, and has an influence on gasification reactions. Global analyses (proximate) give an indication of coal type and quality:
The first synthesis gas was produced by coal pyrolysis in the late 18th century. Gasification became a commercial process in 1812 with The London Gas, Light and Coke Company.
The first applications were lighting, followed by heating. Electricity generation is a much more recent development.
