7. Estimated global resources
The assessment of recoverable resources for bedrock hydrocarbon deposits is complex, even in the case of producing basins such as those in the USA. However, in many sedimentary basins, conventional exploration has been undertaken and petroleum systems have been identified, even if no commercial accumulation of hydrocarbons has taken place.
In many sedimentary basins, source rocks have been identified and studied in terms of organic matter and hydrocarbon content, thickness and regional extent. These data enable us to make an initial assessment of potentially prospective areas for the exploitation of bedrock hydrocarbons.
