Research and development of new polymer materials will remain very active in the years to come in order to obtain materials with improved separation properties for emerging applications (separation of CO₂ /CH₄, CO₂ /N₂ , olefin/paraffin), with better resistance to poisoning (by heavy hydrocarbons for example), with reverse selectivities (see § 7.4 ), etc.
