2.1 Classification of microfluidic devices by applied force

Droplet-based microfluidic technology can be divided into two broad categories, depending on whether the method used is active or passive.

In passive microfluidic devices, the flow of a dispersed phase within a continuous immiscible mobile phase spontaneously causes the formation of a droplet as a result of competition between the shear forces imposed by the flow of the continuous phase and interfacial forces.
