3. Current developments and outlook
In the current development of new dielectrics, two key words are decisive: integration and multifunctionality. Although these keywords are relatively standard for many electronics applications, they take on a very special meaning for capacitors. In fact, as we saw earlier, the best-performing dielectric materials are often refractory compounds requiring high synthesis and shaping temperatures that are difficult to match with the silicon microelectronics and "flexible" electronics sectors. Moreover, capacitors are one of the weakest links in microelectronics in terms of size. We list below the various ways in which dielectric materials can be integrated to solve this problem. We will then show that, for a given integration density, certain dielectric materials offer opportunities to increase functionality thanks to their adaptive properties in response to external stress.
