Spectroscopy is the study of the frequency distribution of radiation emitted, absorbed or scattered by a substance. Spectroscopy thus provides information on the structure of the emitting or absorbing substance. The spectroscopic response of a material of unknown composition is also used for identification and assay.
Until the invention of lasers, optical spectroscopy was essentially twofold: absorption spectroscopy and emission spectroscopy
