1.1 What is a metric?
A metric is a quantity that can be measured directly by observation or calculated from field data. When its interpretation is used to evaluate or assess a system under study, it is called an indicator.
In the field of bibliometrics and scientometrics, metrics applied to scientific and technical information, often referred to as STI, mainly reflect scientific production and usage. While the first metrics developed in the field of bibliometrics and scientometrics were initially aimed at improving collection management for librarians and access to knowledge for researchers, they are now widely used in research evaluation.
