A tracking radar measures a target's coordinates and provides data used to determine its trajectory and, if necessary, predict its future position.
All or some of the measurable parameters—distance, bearing, azimuth, and Doppler frequency—are measured for this purpose. Almost all radars can be considered tracking radars if the information they provide is processed for the purpose of tracking. However, the term “tracking radar” is reserved for those systems capable of performing this operation in real time and with sufficient accuracy. As we will see later, this requires specific measurement methods for both angles and distance.
