1.1 Source coding
The elementary bitstream to be transmitted on a digital TV channel is called ES (Elementary Stream). This is either a video or an audio signal. These digital video and audio signals are streams compressed in MPEG-2 or MPEG-1 for video, and in MPEG-1 layer I or layer II for audio.
