To meet sound reproduction criteria, sound distribution must be at least as good as it would be without a PA system.

If the room is acoustically satisfactory to begin with, the sound system will only have an amplifying role and should, in principle, be content to respect the natural balance. In practice, however, all rooms have their shortcomings, and the sound system is often called upon to play a corrective and compensatory role with regard to the most disadvantaged areas.

Setting up a good sound system therefore requires prior knowledge of the venue and its shortcomings.
