Digitizing a source involves transforming it into a digital file or signal: a text using a digital scanner, a still image using a digital camera, an analog audio signal using an audio capture card, or an analog image signal using a digital video or digital cinema camera, video capture card or film scanner.

The result of digitization is called the digital native format and takes the form of either a binary digital signal (two levels) or binary coded data (0 or 1) contained in a stored file or in a transmitted data stream
