The exchange of audio data streams between production studio equipment is usually supported by two-channel links.

• Professional AES/EBU [IEC 60958-4]

The data stream consists of two channels, each coded linearly to a maximum of 24 bits. Three such links are needed to carry 5.1 without any reduction in bit rate.

Connectors can be either XLR 3-pin 110 Ohms or BNC 75 Ohms, hence the need for impedance adapters.

• Consumer S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) [IEC 60958-3], on coaxial cable with Cinch corrector and/or TDSLINK (Toshiba-Link) link on plastic fiber and EIAJ/JEITA corrector.
