1.1.1 Single-mode and multimode fibers
The fibers currently used in transmission, both single-mode and multimode, are rotationally symmetrical dielectric guides made up of concentric layers with different optical properties. In an ideal fiber, the refractive index n depends only on the distance r from the axis. The graph n (r ) is called the fiber's index profile. Figure
