Military radio communications use HF and VHF radio channels, whose relatively low frequencies (a few tens of megahertz at best) and targeted ranges make link balancing a delicate matter, depending on the conditions of use in the field (electronic warfare). These transmission channels, with bit rates mostly below 10 kbit/s, "naturally" have a high bit error rate (sometimes less than 10 ^–3 ).
