network prefix
A set of contiguous IP addresses uniquely defined by the network address (the first address of the prefix) and a mask corresponding to the block size. In IPv4, addresses are encoded on 32 bits, in IPv6 on 128 bits.
Examples:
the 192.168.1.0/24 prefix is a block of 2^(32-24) or 256 IP addresses, the block running from address 192.168.1.0 to address 192.168.1.255.
the prefix 2001:db8:aaaa:1::/64 is a block of 2^(128-64) or 2^64 IPv6 addresses, the first of which is 2001:db8:aaaa:1:0:0:0:0 and the last of which is 2001:db8:aaaa:1:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff.
