2. General principles of PLCs

PLC technologies are designed to transmit data over medium- and low-voltage power cables. As the electrical medium is shared and sensitive to various external noises, the various PLC technologies have integrated a set of mechanisms at the physical layer and data link layer to improve transmission and access to the medium.

2.1 Different network modes

Since a network is made up of several devices exchanging data, it is necessary to manage these exchanges so that they are organized and optimized. The type of network can be defined according to the PLC technology or the power grid topology used. Three network modes used by PLC technologies.
