Application development for embedded systems is changing. Long dominated by the Ada language for mission-critical applications, and by proprietary solutions based on C/C++ languages, the embedded and real-time world is looking for a new reference environment, preferably shared with the world of information systems, which could well be Java.

This language, driven by its undeniable assets such as robustness, portability and above all its ability to cooperate with existing components written in C, is in the process of making its revolution smoothly. The ideas presented here give an idea of the issues that need to be addressed to enable Java to be used in real-time and embedded systems.
