In computerized data processing, scripts act on the real world. Programming is the art of writing such scripts. Natural languages are not concise, simple or inambiguous enough for this task, and so special computing languages were and are still being invented. This article is dedicated to these languages.

INTRODUCTION
The term "computer languages" covers all the languages used to describe the multiple entities used in computing. These include not only programming languages, but also description languages and everything that structures the texts involved in data processing. It's a story that began in earnest in 1950, but is still going strong today. Conventional presentations often follow a chronological order, presenting the major languages decade by decade

, or, alternatively, adopt a point of view categorizing programming languages into large imperative, functional, logic and object families
. Without denying the interest of such presentations, we prefer to present here the forces underlying the evolution of these languages.
